  2010 CAP Foundation Conference Travel Award for Digital Pathology

About the Award

The CAP Foundation and the Digital Pathology Association (DPA) will make available up to five (5) conference travel awards of up to $2,000 each for pathology residents and residents doing fellowships to attend the digital pathology conference, Pathology Visions. The conference date is October 24-27, 2010, at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina, San Diego, CA.

The Pathology Visions conference brings together attendees from around the world to share best practices and learn about innovations in digital pathology. The meeting features thought leaders and early adopters in the digital pathology space as well as stimulating presentations for major topics.

Eligibility
Applicants must be residents or fellows in a pathology training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Residents or fellows in pathology must be CAP Junior Members or have submitted completed membership applications at the time of award submission. All applicants will be considered regardless of age, race, gender, national origin, or religion.


Funding
Up to five (5) travel awards of up to $2,000 will be made available. The travel award funding is intended to defray costs of registration and travel expenses. It is expected that the recipient's own institution will support the resident's attendance by authorizing permission to attend.


Application Guidelines
Applicants are required to submit a completed application form and curriculum vitae. Applicants must also submit a narrative summary (no more than 250 words) containing the following information:
  • A description of their interest in informatics, digital pathology, and whole slide imaging
  • Their understanding of the importance of and potential use for digital pathology and whole slide imaging as it relates to pathology, laboratory medicine, and patient care.
  • Why the CAP Foundation support is necessary to attend this conference.
Applicants are required to submit a supporting letter from the residency–training director or Department Chair commenting:
  • Qualifications of the applicant.
  • Why it is important that the applicant attend the conference.
  • How the new knowledge will be used.
  • A statement confirming that any expenses over $500 will be covered by the resident or department.

Selection Process
Award recipients are approved by the CAP Foundation Board of Directors based upon the recommendation of a selection committee. Factors to be considered include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • An understanding of the importance of and potential use for digital pathology and whole slide imaging to pathology
  • Merit of application
  • Value to the applicant
  • Program Director's or Department Chair’s recommendation
Follow-up & Final Report Requirements
At the conclusion of the training period, the award recipient will be asked to complete a short evaluation form about the experience. Recipients will be asked to share their experiences in writing with others.
